Parasite Eve - Playstation Game Review PARASITE EVE By EXDEATH MU WHAT IS PARASITE EVE? PARASITE EVE is the new Squaresoft cinematic style RPG. It is one part BIOHAZARD/RESIDENT EVIL (for the exploration sequences and overall mood) and one part CHRONO TRIGGER (for the RPG style battles). It is the story of a female cop who works the 17th precint of the NYPD. Ever since her mother died mysteriously when she was a child she has wanted to become a cop. The game begins at Christmas time 1997 where our heroine is attending a late night opera at Carnegie Hall. To everyone's surprise the lead singer not only sings, but consumes the entire audience in flames with her devilish powers! She mentions her name, Eve, and as it turns out she has the power to manipulate mitochondria...a vital part of the cells of living organisms. By manipulating the mitochondria she can mutate all sorts of harmless creatures (such as mice) and turn them into bloodthirsty beasts. Aya makes it through the ordeal of the opera fire and the rest of the game is, to put it simply, a hunt for Eve. Of course, it isn't that one sided...the game has fully fleshed out characters and a deep plot as well. I highly recommend this game...it's technically brilliant (gorgeous SGI graphics, superb FMV, well rendered polygonal characters, and a stellar soundtrack) and filled with some pretty original gameplay to boot. Anyway...on with the show. THE GAMEPLAY The game plays VERY much like BIOHAZARD/RESIDENT EVIL 1 and 2. You play a single character, Aya Brea, and move her about on fantastically rendered SGI backdrops. You can run, open drawers and cabinets etc., find and collect items, check your inventory (which has a limited number of slots like BIOHAZARD), equip certain weapons, etc. just like BIOHAZARD. In fact, it plays almost EXACTLY like BIOHAZARD...only better in my opinion. There are some extras like the ability to equip all sorts of different body armor and Aya's arsenal is much bigger than the BIOHAZARD selection. However, the BIGGEST difference comes in the way of battles. Instead of fighting in COMPLETE realtime BIOHAZARD style, the game switches to a more RPG like battle. More info next... THE BATTLE SYSTEM PARASITE EVE's battle system is fairly unique as it combines the traditional RPG elements as well as excellent realtime elements. When you run into an enemy (RPG random battle style) you aren't switched to a brand new screen, but are instead given all fighting options right where you stand. You have an AT meter (Attack meter) that, when filled, allows you to choose what to do. Choices include: attack, run, use item, or use PARASITE ENERGY. PARASITE ENERGY (spells) is shown by a meter as well.each spell uses a certain amount of PARASITE ENERGY and if you have enough energy remaining in the meter then you can use the spell of your choice. PARASITE ENERGY gradually refills itself during the course of the battle, as does the AT meter. Here's where it get interesting though. While you are waiting for your AT meter to fill, you don't just sit there like a moron as in most RPG's.instead you can control Aya in realtime and dodge enemy attacks. Once your AT meter fills then the screen freezes and allows you to decide what you wish to do. Very cool. ~Edited without permission from the complete PARASITE EVE FULL WALKTHROUGH, if you would like excellent walk-through of the game, please go to the following url http://omega.hyper-space.com/access/wse/p_eve.txt . ------------------------------------------------------------------ 4.) Grave of The Fireflies - Anime Review Grave of The Fireflies Central Park Media VHS Sub $29.95, Dub $19.95, DVD $??.?? <-Coming Oct 6, 1998 From the creator of My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service comes a heart felt tale of World War II stricken Japan as a young boy and his sister learn how to survive on their own in a world which has turned its back on those who don't help out. As the movie begins we see the final outcome, and then we flash back to the beginning as the lives of our main characters crumble before our very eyes. The facts are hardhitting and definatly make you care about the wellfare 14-year-old Seita and 4-year-old Setsuko. See the price of War through the eyes of a child as loved ones are lost, memories distryod, food rationed, and lives totally changed. And in it all kids must be kids, but the final outcome that has been known from the beginning, will leave you teary eyed. If you like war movies, history, japanese culture, need a new spin on things, or just want to be entertained, then this movie has something for everyone and can be seen by anyone. When a movie asks, "Why do fireflies die so young?" then you need to go see it. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 5.) Anime/Manga Forum Chat Rooms Closed ROLE PLAYERS DON'T BRING IT HERE! By Adam "OMEGA" Arnold with tons of help by Kaneda "Sept Sat 5, 1998 11:43 AM Due to abuse by certain members of this forum, the forum staff has decided: ALL CONFERENCE ROOMS IN THE ANIME / MANGA FORUM ARE CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. The only exception to this closure is for regularly scheduled, staff-moderated conferences. Conference Room 1 (Kissaten) will be open on Sunday evenings, from 9 - 11 US Eastern Time, for the weekly anime/manga discussion group, hosted by SysOps Tom Mitchell and Jeanne Hedge. This group is for discussion of anime and manga only; it is not a role-play group. To allow forum members to converse outside these hours, the by-invitation group chat and regular 1- on-1chat functions have not been disabled. -the staff of the Anime/Manga Forum" News of this action spread like wild-fire among netacins bringing concern from anime and RPG enthusiast everywhere. But what exactly caused this? On Friday, September 4,1998 the situation reached fever-pitch as members from the RPG Forum on CompuServe engaged into the 'Usual Restaurant' Chat Room on CompuServe's famed Anime/Manga Forum and proceeded to cause virtual mayhem. You see the UR is an omniversal bar that is big enough to have a dance in and even host a wedding, but there are set rules of conduct. And with the knowledge "of animes like NINJA SCROLL and the like, with lots of blood and 'you-can-almost-smell-the-carnage' violence" the RPGers proceeded to carve up the UR members. But, why such a drastic action as shutting down all the chat rooms? Well, this isn't the first time this has occurred as SysOp Jeanne Hedge explains: "Over the past several months, the situation in the rooms has devolved into a very cliquish situation where new users were made to feel very unwelcome. It has been distracting the members, even the non-role-playing members, and forum staff, to the point of distracting attention from anime and manga, which is what this forum is all about. Our forum rules are listed in both the Forum Newsflash and in the General section of the Forum Notices. The staff feels that the most important of these rules is that we do NOT tolerate abuse of any kind. This includes abusive or obscene messages or statements between members, threats, or any actions that disrupt the forum, all of which has been going on by many, many forum members in the conference rooms over a long period of time." As a result of this action an unforeseen side effect occurred in the forum's operating system. "When the rooms were removed, the "Who's Here" list went with them." Thus, causing, the 1-on-1 chat functions to go off line. The situation was quickly remedied with the creation of a invitation-only staff-room, which brought the other functions back on-line. Opposition of the SysOps actions generated over 20 topics with 45+ messages under each topic concerning the closings. This has also "been a news item on several anime-related information services, including the ANN." But, those both opposed and for the closings debated their points, often to the point of absurdity, in the Anime/Manga Forum's message boards. Those for the closings stated that a subtle change in the atmosphere of the UR and other chat rooms had been moving towards a darker tone over the past few months. The UR used to be a place to go to have a virtual drink and chat about life, but as of late, each day there is a virtual fight of some kind. There are even people trying to virtually destroy the UR. It has been suggested that the people who joined only to RPG go to the RPG Forum on CompuServe and possibly move the UR to the RPG Forum all together. But, then that forum already has a 'TAVERN' and they wouldn't like the competition. And "the reason the UR was not even being considered to be moved to the RPGames forum, is cause the UR is for ANIME roleplay. And the RP that goes on in there is a different class altogether than the strict RPG rules etc. a class by itself, really." But, for those interested in a non-CompuServe UR, one already exists on IRC that was created and maintained by the makers of the original. The address is "Dalnet, #usualrestaurant". Ryan-"So what else were they supposed to do? Maybe this will make those people care, maybe it won't. I'm not going to say that I agree completely shutting down the UR was the absolute best way to solve the problem, but other options, such as kicking certain people out of the forum, would have been much worse as far as hard feelings go. The best thing would be for us to all learn from this and maybe acknowledge that perhaps there was a problem. But some of you guys are starting to seem like the little kids who after being grounded, start pounding on the walls and throwing things, and when your grounding is extended, you wonder "What!? What did I do?" All I'm asking is that we try and look at this from both sides. I am just as upset as everyone else, but I hardly think flaming is going to get us anywhere. Life goes on." In conclusion: The chatrooms are still off line and to when they will be back on-line, the date is still unset. ~The Anime/Manga Forum can be reached on CompuServe by the keyword "ANIME", or you can reach it on the internet at http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/jhedge/index.htm ------------------------------------------------------------------ 6.) MixxZine's Expansion By Adam "OMEGA" Arnold Ever since the Manga Anthology was announced well over 2 years ago there has been a lot of interest in the magazine from fans and people who said 'they can't do it.' When Mixx secured Sailor Moon as one of their main titles in their bi-monthly magazine they got tons of pre-orders. It is even stated that there would be a 'Special Edition' of Issue One, but it NEVER saw light. The magazine which was slated for a May 1997 release was delayed until July 1997. Mixx's first issue was released on newsprint and every issue since has boasted glassy stock paper. You can get a free trial issue of Mixx sent to your house, the only problem is their shipping standards are still pollybaging the issues so they will get ruined in the postal system. For months they promised 'we will go monthly soon' but after a year the magazine has only gained more advertisers, more non- consequential columns (with eye straining backgrounds and text), less story pages, and still no Monthly magazine. Now after 7 issues in MixxZine, SAILOR MOON is begin pushed out and into Mixx's new Girls magazine SMILE. The only problem is it will start with Chapter 34 which begins Sailor Moon Super S. That leaves The end of Sailor Moon, Sailor Moon R, and Sailor Moon S untold. Guess what MixxZine's answer is? Let's create a new magazine for Sailor Moon only. Sailor Moon the monthly comic, not available through subscription, will continue the story with Chapter 8. The following Post is from the MixxZine Message Board~~~~~ "Here is the info you wanted. After talking to Editor, I found out the reason why: The reason that Sailor Moon has to be moved to SMILE is the fact that many parents of young readers have written in and would like to have Parasyte separated from the Sailor Moon story, due to the graphic violence of Parasyte. Due to this fact, we are moving the story to SMILE which will start at Super S. There is also a separate Sailor Moon comic that will be coming out monthly, but we are not sure when the regular run will begin. Mixxzine(R) will no longer be carrying the Sailor Moon story, but the story up until the Super S story (which will be in SMILE) will be made into comics, and pocket manga. Yes there will be more pocket mangas to come. Hope this answers any questions you may have."~~~~~ Now the catch: MixxZine costs $4.95, Smile costs $3.95, and Sailor Moon costs $2.95. That is 3 titles to keep up with compared to one. You do the math. ------------------------------------------------------------------ 7.) Vote Sailor Moon For TEEN PEOPLE! I don't know if you have heard yet but one of my other ML's sent me this address. If you go there you can vote for “Serena from Sailor Moon” to be on the cover of this Magazine. I am friends with some people at a Highlander Licencee company in speaking with one of them he said he was not allowed to tell me much about H4 due to all those contracts and stuff. Well after a few drinks he started blurting like a fish. Title: Highlander 4: The Search for Connor For some reason Conner is missing and main plot is Duncan trying to find him. There are two main twists that he told me about this flick. (Which is shooting right now for release next summer. Anyone who saw Adrian Paul on the Magic late night show last month knows that.) The fist is that Sean Connery has a brief role in the film. It's only a flashback scene and it isn't very long. The Second and most signifigant is that supposedly Christopher Lambert only agreed to be in the film if Conner died. CHRONOS CANCELLED!!! Thursday, September 10, 1998 Chronos Cancelled Chronos, the DC Comics time-travel title, will end with issue #11, according to the Detroit News' Comic Book Continuum. But it was a fun ride as long as it lasted. http://www.mania.com/BUZZ/index.asp?x_date=9/10/98 'CHRONOS' OUT OF TIME DC Comics spokeswoman Patty Jeres has confirmed what comics fans have feared for some time: New series "Chronos" has been canceled, with issue 11 being its last. This comes only about six weeks after DC announced it would be supporting the title, even as it was being confirmed that "Creeper," "Chase" and "Young Heroes in Love" would be publishing their last issues during this month's "DC One Million" crossover event. While the sales numbers on "Chronos" weren't much above those of the canceled books - leading to wide speculation that it would have its plug pulled at the same time - the book was transferred to editor Mike Carlin and crossovers with higher profile characters were on the drawing board. Jeres declined to comment on the reasons behind the sudden cancellation. http://www.comicbookresources.com/ "Too bad though. With the multiverse returning this series really had potential. Unfortunately it only sold about 11,000 copies (way under DC's 18,000 copies cut off)" ~Tenzel Kim ---------------------------------------------------------------- 16.) He has a list of pages (no covers, but some minor splash pages) up to L* #65. Jeff is having fun with L* #69, for which he's finished eight pages. Tom worked on AQUAMAN SECRET FILES, which will be his last Aquaman job. Tom was exhausted from coloring CRISIS, but would like to work with CRISIS artist George Perez on Marvel's AVENGERS. There aren't any plans for Legion toys, but it's more possible now that DC is making figures (Tom mentioned a 12” Kyle Rayner figure for next year, for example). Tom thinks Proty would make a good beanbag plush. Jeff suggested that the fans contact DC's marketing department to request Legion toys. Tom intended the blob in the ADVENTURE COMICS 80-Pager's Legion story to be “more mechanical and tougher to deal with.” Tom had an idea for who sent the probe to defeat the Legion—but that was before the request to alter the monster. Jeff wanted to draw that story, but he wasn't asked to, despite Tom's request for Jeff as the penciller. Tom didn't know who the artist was, until he received the pages to color. There may be more 80-Page Giants next year. Tom would like to see more Bizarro stories, like the one in this ADVENTURE Giant, and we might see a Bizarro Legion “when we least expect it.” We'll see Lyle's parents soon. The Legion splits into two separate groups in L* #67. Editorially, the split was made in an attempt to attract new readers who might be intimidated by one large team. Tom says the creators will often rotate the characters between the books. Ayla is scheduled to be in LSH first, but she won't be there forever, so Jeff will get to draw her again. - -- Alex Tam goldie@intergate.bc.ca; Nachro2 on AOL ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 17.) A Few Crass Words from Kaneda Hello. This is my first run, so bear with me, I'll improve with time and experience. Oh, how I love Anime. It can do a million feats of nature that others can only dream of. Like somehow finding a way to squeeze in some form of nudity and/or coarse language into any kind of circumstance. Don't tell me that ain't something special. I draw sketches, and my technique has taken on a very Anime-esque flavor. I like it that way. I'm at that transitional stage in my own artistic renaissance when when I see someone who draws better than I do, I want to wrap my arms around his/her neck and squeeze until the earwax oozes out of their ears. Don't tell me any spoilers from Neon Genesis Evangelion or I'll rip off your head and ram it up your own anal cavity. I'm only on tape 8. Stupid Blockbuster Video, they refuse to stock the rest! I told them, "Now hear this. I refuse to do business with an organization that fails to meet the essential needs of their clientele. Me and all my friends are going to come in here every single day from now on and check to see if you've stocked Eva tapes 9-up. And while we're at it, we might rent some video games and buy some ridiculously expensive junk food." That oughta put the pressure on... Some of you might be asking, "Why did I choose to be Kaneda?". Well, Kaneda is the ideal character for a lazy person like me to RP. First of all, he's no one special. Just a guy. With a motorcycle. No special powers, no miracles performed, no terribly futuristic weaponry, just the occasional brandishings of a crow bar and a mouth like a toilet. I said, "Good God, that's me..." I was in Ireland a few days ago. Not anywhere did I see ANY smiling eyes... Then i came to a stunning realization. Eyes don't have mouths... But that's beside the point. Do you know how many wasps there are over there? If you're allergic to wasps, you go there for a week, you come back looking like a blushing Merv Griffin. They're aggressive little things... The roads there are extremely narrow, and they're taken like friggin' speedways. Well, I suppose that's it for now. Thanks for tolerating me, have a safe trip home. - Kaneda ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 18.)
