Mail Desk

by Janet Crocker

Welcome back to another astonishing edition of Animefringe's Mail Desk! This month, we hear word from Vampire Hunter D's translator, get some insight into the world of Inu-Yasha, a look into the Star Ocean saga and lots more! Got a question? Send us an email and ask!

Dear Animefringe,
Just wanted to send you a quick note and thank you for the very kind words on my translation of Hideyuki Kikuchi's first Vampire Hunter D novel. I met with the author again last weekend and we are both completely blown away by the reaction we've been getting to the English edition of the novel. Mr. K started out as a translator himself, and he told me it was his dream for over 20 years to have one of his books published in English. Thanks for helping to spread the word.

Look for the second VHD novel to be out in early September (well, the last I heard--but no one tells me anything), and the third in January '06. Mr. Kikuchi and Asahi Sonorama currently have an offer to do the next 3 books as well on a similar schedule, so let's hope that comes to pass. Just in case, I have to get back to translating the fourth novel.

Thanks again for helping to bring our work to the attention of other fans. See you back in the Nobility-plagued 121st century!

Sincerely,
Kevin Leahy

Thank you for all your hard work!

Dear Mr. Arnold,
I have just read your article on the Tamagotchi Connections. They sound like they have a lot of fun new features, compared to the original version. I had a question, though. About how much do they cost? I e looked everywhere for the price, but with no luck. If you can help me, I\d greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

-Sadie S.

Hi Sadie S!
It looks like Tamagotchis run between USD$10.00 to $30.00.

Dear Animefringe,
Matoka here and once again I seek your expertise on another baffling moment in anime. The Inuyasha Movie #2: The Castle Beyond the Looking Glass is one of my favorites. It has all the right elements of a great story except this moment that has me stuck on stupid. Kagome and Inuyasha are sitting by the fire as gentle music plays setting that classic romantic mood. After wishing on a star, Kagome tells him she likes him just the way his is (as a half-demon) and of course, Inuyasha ruins the moment with his lack of tact. After yelling at him to be serious, she touches his arm to turn him around and... CUE THE MUSIC! He turns in slow motion and Kagome is breathless. WHOA! STOP THE CAR...did I miss something? I had to play this scene about ten times and I still don know what Kagome saw in Inuyasha\s eyes. Can you help me figure out what went over my head?

Thanks and here\s to another great issue. Keep up the good work!

-Matoka

Hi Matoka,
I’ll refer this over to Susan, fluent in Inu-Yasha:

“I re-watched that scene a few times as well. It could be that Kagome realizes that Inu-Yasha is more human than what she thought, for he seems to have human eyes for that split second, or that he is taking her words seriously (although he denies this verbally), and that she is surprised by the seriousness in his eyes.”

Hope this helped,

-Janet

Dear Animefringe,
Did you ever get the free CD from Geneon's "Buy 4 get 1 free" promotion? I haven't. If you haven't, what's going on? And why isn't anyone else making any noise about it?

- TonyC

Hi TonyC,
Here’s a statement from Geneon:

"Hi all,

This is Stephen, an AOD lurker and the anime music marketer over here at Geneon. I wanted to let those of you who are still waiting to receive their CDs know that all remaining, outstanding orders will be filled out, starting in late July.

As the person solely responsible for coordinating the fulfillment of these CDs, I cannot apologize deeply or profusely enough to those of you who have waited in such good faith for what seems like an eternity for your CD to arrive. To be sure, this is really unprofessional and highly incompetent on my part, and for the record, no other individual(s), parties or companies are responsible for the inconveniences and frustrations caused, except myself. There's no excuse...I know this has been a very very long time in coming (a new record) and I truly regret the troubles caused. You guys all really deserve better than this.

Please know that I'm working to resolve this and making things right for everyone still affected, up to the very last individual. You're welcome to PM (private message) questions to me here and I'll try to get back to each of you individually by e-mail shortly.

Well, I should mention that I'm going to be attending Anime Expo this week and then Comic-Con International a week later, so I might not be able to immediately reply back to private e-mails, but if you see me there at the company booth, do feel free to tap me on the shoulder (or clock me in jaw if you're feeling frustrated ) and then let's shoot the breeze.

My thanks to each and every one of you, for displaying such incredible patience, gracious humor, and understanding during what was an absurd and trying situation. Most of all, thanks for supporting anime CD soundtracks and making it more accessible than ever before.

Kind regards and wholehearted apologies,
- Stephen"

I hope that answers your question!

-Janet

Dear Animefringe,
Got a few questions:

1. How old are you guys? I assume Shannon is 15 or 16. Any of you in your 20s or 30s?

2. What's Bleach about? Is it shoujo or shounen?

3. Ever review non-anime things? If not, could you?

4. What's the Utena car? What type of base car was used and how much is one? Is it available in the US?

Hello Freeza_Frost,
In answer to your questions:

1. We’re all between the ages of 17 and 26. (I think.) Therefore, no one is thirty yet.

2. Look up one of our reviews and see.

3. We review non-anime, yet nifty stuff all the time. But anime usually takes a front seat.

4. The Utena car comes from the movie. It’s a joke about the ending, which I won’t spoil here. It doesn’t really exist.

Dear Animefringe,
since hentai is geared toward guys, what do u do in those certain sitations? or do u watch hentai geared towards girls?

like the fairly oddparents? happy.gif

do u like dragon ball z, tenchi muyo or NGE?

Heya Jeremy Quest,
I just review what I see. Fairly Oddparents is okay; DBZ needs to be put out of its mercy; Tenchi is okay; Evangelion is over-rated.

-Janet

Dear Animefringe,
This is the best article I've read about Paranoia Agent. I really enjoyed the interview. Thanks!

Thanks, Anonymous!
I'm so glad you enjoyed that article. I had a blast writing it!

-Adam

Hello Jeremy,
Here’s the order:

Star Ocean (SNES)
Star Ocean: The Second Story (PS)
Star Ocean: Blue Sphere (GBC)
Star Ocean: Til the End of Time (PS2)

Only the last three games have a US release.

-Janet

Dear Animefringe,
I see that you're a CD Japan customer. I'm trying to get hold of a title that they stock, but want to sound them out before I give them my credit card details.

Have you ever had any bad experiences with them, or ever heard of them selling pirate DVDs etc.

Cheers

PB

Hey PB,
Andrew has used CD Japan; in fact, “I am getting some cds right now. I have never had bought a bootleg from them ever.” They sound as legit as you can get to me. Happy Shopping!

-Janet

Dear Animefringe,
When is Gundam SEED Destiny going to air on Cartoon Network? Please email me back if u know the date, but only once because i don't like coming in contact with strangers, no offense.

None taken, Anonymous.
Andrew heard that the DVD will be coming out in late December or early January, so it should start showing on Cartoon Network shortly before then. Think November.
